What Is Solventless Hash? A Beginner's Guide to Ice Water Hash and Live Rosin

Five small black jars of hash in a row on a wooden table beside Hash Flight patches

If you have spent time around cannabis lately, you have heard the word "solventless." It shows up on menus, on jars and in conversations between people who take their hash seriously. Here is what solventless hash is, and why it has become the connoisseur's choice.

What "solventless" means

Most cannabis concentrates are made by dissolving the plant's resin with a chemical solvent, then removing the solvent. Solventless hash skips that step entirely. The resin is separated from the plant with only water, ice, heat and pressure.

Ice water hash

Ice water hash starts with the plant and a bath of ice-cold water. Gentle agitation knocks the resin glands (the trichomes) loose, and they are collected through a series of fine mesh bags, then dried. What is left is pure resin, with the aroma and flavor of the cultivar it came from.

Live rosin

Live rosin goes one step further: ice water hash is pressed with gentle heat and pressure until the oil flows out. Live rosin stands as the epitome of purity: a solventless extraction method that retains the authentic flavors and aromas of cannabis, allowing aficionados to savor the true essence.

Why connoisseurs taste it like wine

Because nothing is added and nothing is stripped out, solventless hash tastes like the plant it came from. Two cultivars from the same producer can be worlds apart, one bright and citrusy, the next earthy or sweet. That is what makes it worth tasting slowly, side by side, the way a sommelier works through a flight of wine.

How to taste it

Temperature matters. Low-temperature dabs bring out the flavor and aroma that make solventless hash special, without the harshness of too much heat. Our guide to low-temperature dabs covers the basics.

Hash Flight: a guided tasting

In May 2024, the Grassfed team launched Hash Flight: guided solventless hash tastings in Los Angeles. Guests sit down for a smoke-free flight of five low-temperature dabs from one featured brand, with a hash connoisseur walking them through the aromas and flavors of each cultivar. It is wine tasting culture applied to solventless concentrates.
