Cali Sober at Work: Why Cannabis Literacy Belongs in Workplace Wellness
For decades, the after-work drink was the default way teams came together. That default is changing. Cannabis has become mainstream, and workplace education has not caught up.
Fewer drinks, more cannabis
Alcohol consumption in the U.S. is declining, particularly among younger adults. In Gallup's 2025 survey, just 54% of American adults said they drink alcohol, the lowest level Gallup has ever recorded, and only 50% of adults under 35 said they drink.
At the same time, cannabis use remains at or near historic highs. A 2024 analysis of national survey data, published in the journal Addiction, found that by 2022 approximately 17.7 million Americans were consuming cannabis daily or near-daily, more than the 14.7 million consuming alcohol that frequently.
Plenty of people now describe themselves as "California sober": skipping alcohol while still enjoying cannabis. For employers, the question is no longer whether cannabis exists within their workforce. It does. The question is whether employees have the knowledge to make responsible decisions around it.
The education gap
Today's cannabis market includes increasingly potent flower, edibles, beverages, vapes and concentrates, yet most consumers receive very little credible education about dosage, impairment, tolerance or overconsumption.
The CDC estimates that roughly 3 in 10 people who use cannabis may have cannabis use disorder, making responsible-use education increasingly relevant as consumption grows.

What cannabis literacy covers
Cali Sober Goes Corporate is our cannabis-literacy and harm-reduction program for adult employees. Our programs cover:
- Dosage, potency and methods of consumption
- Mindful and intentional use
- Recognizing overconsumption and problematic habits
- Cannabis, alcohol and combined impairment
- Driving and workplace safety
- Understanding today's regulated cannabis marketplace
- Creating inclusive social environments beyond traditional alcohol-centered corporate culture
Programs can be offered as educational seminars, interactive workshops or customized employee-wellness programs.
Education, not promotion
We educate. We don't encourage consumption. Corporate cannabis education is not about getting anyone to try anything; it is about replacing stigma and misinformation with credible information, for the people who already use cannabis and the people who work alongside them.
Cannabis shouldn't be about consuming more. It should be about understanding more.
Why it belongs in workplace wellness
Companies already educate employees about alcohol, nutrition, sleep, stress and mental health. Cannabis literacy is becoming the next logical part of workplace wellness. As cannabis becomes more normalized, responsible employers have an opportunity to lead with education.

Beyond the happy hour
A workforce that drinks less still wants to connect. Cannabis literacy helps teams build social environments where everyone is included, whether they drink, use cannabis, or do neither.
